What happens at a checkup
The hygienist cleans above and just below the gumline, polishes, and checks how your gums are doing. Dr. Seyal then examines each tooth, looks at your bite, checks the soft tissue of your mouth for anything unusual, and reviews any x-rays with you on the screen. Most first visits take about an hour.
How often you should come
For most people, every six months. If you have had gum disease, get cavities easily, have diabetes, or smoke, three or four months is safer. Dr. Seyal will tell you which schedule fits you and why, and it is fine to ask him to explain.
Why this matters beyond your teeth
Gum infection does not stay in your mouth. It is linked to heart disease, harder-to-control diabetes, and problems in pregnancy. A cleaning twice a year is one of the cheapest things you can do for your health overall.

Does a cleaning hurt?
A routine cleaning on healthy gums is not painful. If your gums are inflamed they may be tender, and if it has been a long time we can numb the area. Tell the hygienist and she will adjust.
